County League Round 11

Dr Crokes 2-19 Spa 2-10

Played in Lewis Road on Thursday 9th of August

This was a very competitive game and a good work out for the forthcoming County Championship. Points were excahnged on a few occasions in the first quarter at the end of which we led 0-4 to 0-2. A goal from a penalty by Spa at the beginning of the second quarter put them a point in front. We got well on top for the next ten mnutes and sent over six points without reply. A goal by our opponents in the 29th minute put just two points between the teams but we had the last score of the half, a point for a half time lead of 0-11 to 2-2.

A goal by Jordan Kiely and a point by Alan O'Sullivan at the start of the second half put us seven points in front. Our opponents then had a good period of play and had three unanswered points to reduce our lead to four points. We had the next three points of the game but our opponents outscored us three points to one as we entered the last quarter. This left us with a five point lead but a goal by David Shaw and two further points by Colm Cooper and Brian Looney sent the teams into injury time with the Home team ten points clear. Spa outscored us two points to one in this added time. This left us winners on a score of 2-19 to 2-10.

The defining moments of the game for us were our two second half goals and two outstanding saves by our goalkeeper Shane Murphy, both in the second half as well.

This leaves us unbeaten in County League, Divison 1, 2018 with 10 wins and 1 draw. It also gives us a home venue for the final.

Under 13 Girls County Championship

Our stars of the present and no doubt the future too,Pia(13),Joyclen(11)and Sabra(9)..the Hickey sisters that were instrumental in helping their U 13 team to victory over Beaufort in the quarter final of the County Champioship on Friday last.Being the  time for year for family holidays, the team were missing a number of regulars and only for Sabra bring her boots along in the car, the team would have had to line out  with 14 players for the game.Thankfully, having the full compliment gave the girls great belief  that the could carve out a result on the night, and that is what they did.The opening quarter was very evenly balanced both teams getting  great scores.Luckly for the  Crokes Cara O ' Sullivan, who usually plies her trade in the forwards, demonstrated her array of skills as netminder for the first half and with Teagan O 'Sullivan,Selina Collins and Emer Finn as last  line of defence they managed to keep their opponents to very few scores in the opening 25 min.Cara's  great kickouts gave her midfield pairing of Laura O' Shea and Pia Hickey numerous opportunities to keep the forwards supplied with plenty of scoring opportunities. The full forward line of Katie McCarthy, Sabra and Gráinne Byrne kept their markers very busy throughout and were the  main reason the team led at the  half time whistle. On the very warm evening that was in it, there were some very weary legs trudging back on after the break notably Ali O Donoghue, Sinead Oliver,  Jocelyn  and Leah McMahon who put up an amount  of scores and mileage over the game. Special mention must also go  Ella Bartlett at half back  and Clodagh McGorrigan  at wing forward .Both girls line out with our U 11 team, and the two of them had a tremendous game. The win means that we play our neighbours-Killarney  Legion- in the semi final on Friday evening 10th in Lewis Road
